Field:
animal husbandry, environmental protection

Executive Summary:
Pharmatéka Bt. has developed and obtained international patent for such a new preventive preparation (Diarr-Stop S Plus) against swine dysentery which – if mixed in the feed of the pig – is suitable for prevention of dysentery caused by Brachyspiras bringing about severe financial losses.
The bacteria causing dysentery are especially sensitive to the preparation.
If the disease has already developed, the symptoms of dysentery cease within several days after feeding the animals with the preparation. With using the preparation – not classified as medicine – no resistance develops.
It can continuously be used from the beginning of the fattening period until slaughtering, it has no adverse effect on human health, so it has no withdrawal period.
It also improves the efficiency of the currently used dysentery treatments with antibiotics. If it is fed, the costs can considerably be reduced.

Result of the innovation:
Dysentery cases and mortality arising from that have decreased by at least 50% and 40%, respectively. The cost of medicines for dysentery has decreased by 40% (also including the cost of the Diarr-Stop S Plus). According to the experience obtained so far, the production indicators have also improved.
The daily gain in weight and the specific feed consumption have improved by 8 grams and 0.2–0.3 kgs, respectively. The livestock has become balanced: the optimum slaughter weight was simultaneously reached by about 4% more animals. By 16–24 kgs less feed is required for fattening of an animal on the average.
Depending on the feed and meat prices, costs savings by animal of HUF 1,100–1,300 or more can be reached, if it is fed.
The calculated market share of the product was 5.1% in 2008, 9.5% in 2009, and nearly 21.4% in 2010. The volume sold in 2010 has generated a profit of approx. HUF 70 million for the producer and cost savings of HUF 900 million in all for the farms. In farms where the preparation was fed, the consumption of antibiotics against dysentery has decreased by 40%.
The extent of the decrease is significant not only from the aspect of environmental protection but from that of the human health (endeavour to reduce the use of antibiotics in animal husbandry).
